KREBS — They came from Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Okmulgee and Ardmore and Checotah. They crowded into the dark and smoky confines of Rumors Sports Bar in Krebs, and they spent the better part of a Saturday playing game after game of 8-ball billiards.
And they did it to help send a local team to the Billiards Congress of America state competition in Miami in April.
“McAlester has never had a ladies team go to State,” tournament organizer Kathryn Snelling said.
“There are not that many ladies that play even good enough a lot of the time, so we just finally found some that really want to go.”
Snelling, Rachel Petersen, Sharon Stanton, Mandy Lay and Shawta Davis make up the Rumors Girls, for whom the tournament raised money for state tournament expenses. Snelling said the team has only been playing together for a few months.
“We’ve all played on different teams in the leagues, but then we all came together, realizing we could go (to State),” Snelling said. “It was more just us talking and then figuring out if we can all play together.”
