SAVANNA — Savanna 18, Coalgate 13: Savanna coach James Bond knows Coalgate coach Jeremy Reeder very well. And Bond knows how strong a program Reeder — a former Savanna Bulldog himself — has built.
“They’ve racked up points on some people, and then held them,” Bond said. “It was a defensive battle the first half.”
By defensive battle, Bond meant that in the first 24 minutes of play, only one touchdown occurred: a 42-yard touchdown run by Chase Woods that put Savanna up 6-0.
Savanna went up 12-0 midway through the third on a 35-yard touchdown pass from Seth Burke to Blaine Peters. Peters ran a corner route on the play, catching the ball at the 10 and covering the remainder of the field on foot.
Reeder’s Wildcats responded with two scores of their own, going up 13-12 with 8:26 left in the game. But Seth Burke intercepted a pass with a little over three minutes left in the game, giving the Bulldogs great field position.
The interception set up a 15-yard Christian Preston touchdown run to put Savanna back in the lead.
“It was actually designed to go up the middle, and he didn’t have anything there, so he just gutted it out, and Jimmy Sparks threw great a block,” Bond said
Bond said he was “ecstatic” to be beat a team as strong as Coalgate and begin district play next week 4-0.
“That’s the best start we’ve had in a long time,” Bond said.
