McALESTER — The Pittsburg County Little League season is nearly over. The Big 13 division began its week-long championship tournament Monday, and the other divisions’ final tournaments begin next week.
Big 13 coach and PCLL treasurer Josh Hass said more than 400 kids signed up for Little League this year, creating more than 28 teams. Those teams ranged from t-ball for kids ages 3-4 up to Big 13 for kids 11-13.
The Big 13 division is a new addition to Little League, with a new baseball diamond to go along with it. It’s now 50 feet from the mound to the plate, and 70 feet between the basepaths — 10 yards farther apart than in lower divisions.
With the old rules, runners couldn’t leave their bases until the ball crossed home plate. With the longer basepaths, players can really steal bases, making speed a weapon for the teams that learn how to read pitchers.
