Arizona wins 2013 Jr. Sunbelt Championship

McALESTER — Arizona starting pitcher Calvin Lebrun limited Colorado to two runs on six hits, and Arizona never looked back after a three-run bottom of the third, beating Colorado in Wednesday’s 2013 Jr. Sunbelt Classic championship, 5-2, at Mike Deak Field in McAlester.

With his team up 5-2, Lebrun pitched a scoreless fifth inning, then struck out his first two batters of the sixth. But with two outs and their team down by two runs, Colorado’s Keenan Eaton and Jeremy Hochmuth both singled to left field.

Lebrun escaped the sixth inning without giving up a run, getting Korbin Williams to ground into an unassisted fielder’s choice at third base.

Still down three heading into the top of the seventh, Colorado’s Tyler Loptein reached on an error. But Lebrun bounced right back to strike out Andrew Nicklanovich looking for Lebrun's sixth strikeout of the game, then got leadoff hitter Cameron Frazier to bounce one at third baseman Turner Lace.

Lace fielded the grounder, threw it to Payton Squier covering second, then watched as Squier threw to Cameron Ming for the game-ending, championship-clinching double play. Lebrun picked up the win and was named the tournament’s Outstanding Pitcher.

Arizona teammate Luis Gonzalez, who went 2-for-3 including an RBI double in the bottom of the third that put Arizona up 1-0, was named Most Valuable Player.
