McALESTER — By most accounts, this year’s Southern Plains Traditional Archery Tournament featured a particularly challenging 25-target course. Bushes, branches, trees — plenty of obstacles stood between archers and their three-dimensional targets at the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant campgrounds Saturday.
Archers commonly refer to natural blockers like that as “trash.” But no matter how much “trash” filled the course, the tournament still brought approximately 400 shooters from all over Oklahoma and beyond. And one non-Oklahoman archer — Alison Dowell of Wichita, Kans. — stood above the rest Saturday, winning both the Women’s Longbow and Recurve Bow competitions.
