McALESTER — McAlester News-Capital writer Rachel Petersen has competed in some pretty big pool tournaments. But she’d never before taken on the Black Gold Bowling Congress of America Pool League Oklahoma State 8-Ball Championship, which this year took place April 15-21 at Buffalo Run Casino in Miami.

The first time was a charm for Petersen, who went 6-0 in the Women’s Open Singles tournament, winning the championship and obtaining the rank of Master.

Petersen received a bye in the first round, then allowed just one loss over the next two rounds. Her tournament became much tougher in the fourth round, when she played Michelle Davis, a “super, super strong player” who will team with Petersen at the BCAPL National Championships in Las Vegas in July.

In a race to four wins, Petersen beat Davis, 4-2. Petersen had to battle through a 4-3 win against Catherine Naes in the fifth round, then beat Amanda Halsne in the semifinals, 4-2.

Gwen Thompson won the loser’s bracket, and Petersen beat Thompson, 4-2, to finish the tournament on top.
