McAlester’s defense dominated both Wagoner and Pryor, and the offense scored seven touchdowns between two half-hour games. The Buffs came away with two wins in Friday’s four-team scrimmage, beating Wagoner, 18-6, and Pryor, 24-12, at Hook Eales Stadium in McAlester.
The Buffs’ defense held the Wagoner Bulldogs to just two first downs in seven drives, five times sending the Bulldogs off after just three plays. Riley Smith, Josh Peckio and Robby Stephens all recorded sacks, and the Bulldogs’ only touchdown — a 40-yard pass from Corey Tipton to AJ Freeth with about nine minutes left — came against Michael Mines, a corner not expected to start for the varsity.
Freeth’s score cut the lead to 12-6, but the Buffs quickly responded. With receiver Caden Pratt and quarterback Dalton Wood both in the backfield, the Buffs twice hiked the ball to Caden.
On the first direct snap, Caden broke off a 16-yard run to the 24-yard-line. On the second, Caden handed off to Wood, who chewed up the remaining 24 yards for a touchdown and an 18-6 lead with 7:45 left.
Wood completed 17 of 24 passes for 119 yards, four touchdowns and an interception in two games, adding 99 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown. Pratt caught 10 passes for 89 yards and two touchdowns, and Jarome Smith rushed for 83 yards and two touchdowns.
