McALESTER — With Gavin Crocker’s departure for the defensive coordinator job at Quinton, McAlester found itself without a soccer coach for its spring 2014 season.
Sara Jones, a soccer and volleyball coach for five years in the Ferris Independent School District in Texas, got the job on Aug. 12.
“We’re not going to be doing a lot of just kicking the ball around,” Jones said Thursday. “It’s going to look like a disciplined and organized sport.
“We’ve been doing a lot of footwork, a lot of change-of-direction. As soon as we get through one quick pass, I’ll take them into endurance.”
Jones, 28, grew up in Vernon, Texas. She said her high school didn’t offer soccer, so she played volleyball and tennis and ran cross country.
Moving to the area for personal reasons, Jones said she heard about the job opening in McAlester and applied. In terms of population, Vernon is about two-thirds the size of McAlester, but Jones said the atmosphere here feels very familiar.
