McALESTER — McAlester senior Charles Joyce broke the mold when he started playing basketball. His parents had played football and ran track, but as he said on Feb. 22, Joyce has always felt more at home indoors and on the hard court.
“Back when I was 8, It was just to go and have fun,” Joyce said. He added that his parents have always supported him, even as basketball took him down a different athletic path.
“They just know that I’ve been playing all my life,” he said.
Joyce grew up in the McAlester school system, going through public elementary schools, Puterbaugh Middle School and eventually McAlester High School. Rarely the tallest kid on the court, Joyce said he’s been a guard throughout his basketball career.
“You have to know what’s going on,” Joyce said of his position. “You have to know to control the game.”
