The Tulsa World on Sunday picked McAlester to beat Guthrie in the 5A state championship game. McAlester went 9-1 during the regular season, winning District 5A-3 with a 7-0 record.
The Panthers are currently on a three-game losing streak and have a 1-3 overall record. Pittsburg lost 87-82 at Crowder on Nov. 5 and then lost 74-46 at Stuart on Monday.
The Lady Panthers, conversely, are on a two-game winning streak and have a 3-1 overall record. Pittsburg beat Crowder and Stuart, 77-60 and 67-50, respectively.
Pittsburg hosted Kiowa on Tuesday and next plays at LeFlore on Friday.
Quinton will be at Wynnewood on Friday for the first round of the Class A playoffs, the game starting at 7:30 p.m. Because Quinton enters as a fourth-seed, a win would mean a quarter-final either at Kiefer, the second-place team in District A-7, or at Warner, the third-place team in District A-8.
Quinton finished the football regular season 5-4 overall, 3-4 in the district. Quinton basketball starts Dec. 3 at Warner.
Savanna hosts Wewoka in the first round of the Class A state playoffs Friday at 7:30 p.m. A win for the second-seed Bulldogs would mean a quarter-final either at Afton, the winner of District A-8, or at home against Barnsdall, the fourth-place team from District A-7.
Savanna finished its regular season 8-2 overall, 6-1 in the district. Savanna’s basketball season starts Nov. 19 at Pittsburg.
The Hornets recovered from a 71-65 overtime loss at Kiowa on Nov. 5 by beating Pittsburg at home Friday, 74-46. The Hornets are now 2-1.
The Lady Hornets lost 74-56 at Kiowa and then 67-50 against Pittsburg to fall to 1-2. Stuart played Indianola on Tuesday and next plays at Tushka on Friday.
Wilburton’s basketball season begins Nov. 22 at Panama. It’ll play at the Hartshorne Tournament starting Dec. 2, host the Wilburton Invitational from Dec. 12-14, then host Pocola Dec. 17.
Wilburton went 0-10 during the football season.
