HOLDENVILLE — Asked to hold down a lead, Stuart pitcher Dillon Lawrence struck out eight in three innings of relief, helping the Hornets beat the Allen Mustangs in Saturday’s third-place game of the Moss Spring Invitational Baseball Tournament in Holdenville, 9-6.
Stuart scored the bulk of its runs in the bottom of the second, which Grady Brewer began with a walk. Justin Lawrence followed with a single, and Eric Justice then reached on a bunt single when no one covered first base.
Mitchell drew a bases-loaded walk to give Stuart a lead it would never give up, then Kaleb Wilson drew another bases-loaded walk off reliever Wallen to make it 4-2 Hornets.
Dillon Lawrence then drove in two with a double to left field. He also reached on an infield single and scored in the first, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs.
Lawrence’s first-inning single hit Allen starting pitcher Tommy Peay above the knee, and Peay left the mound in the middle of Wilson’s second-inning at-bat. New pitcher Nick Wallen quickly gave up three runs, but then retired his next two batters in the second.
Wallen then got Jacob Stopp to pop up into the infield. Shortstop Dakota Nickell called for the ball but failed to catch it, allowing two runs to score and make it 9-2 Hornets.
