McALESTER — What started as a store specializing in the fantasy card game “Magic: The Gathering” has become a nexus of multiple different gaming communities in the greater McAlester area. Video games, card games, board games, role playing games —representatives of each group make their way to McAlester Gamerz at 209 East Chickasaw every afternoon and evening to do what they love.
“People were here Saturday night until 3 a.m. playing games,” McAlester Gamerz owner Shannon Rausche said Tuesday.
Much of McAlester Gamerz’s expansion has come in the last six months, after Rausche bought out then-partner Jeremy. Rausche said he and Null disagreed over the store’s future, which for Rausche meant broadening the store’s appeal to more otherwise under-served niches of the community.
“’Magic used’ to be everything,” Rausche said. “It paid all the bills, it paid everything.
“We had a lot of guys that spent a lot of money on certain things. Now we have a lot of people spending less money. Our customer base is much larger.”
