Church gives 150,000 to help schools and local agencies

Jeremiah. 29:7 Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.”

McALESTER — Jeremiah. 29:7

Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.”

Many churches have missions in other countries but Life Church of McAlester is giving $150,000 to help schools and charities right here in McAlester.

“We wanted to invest in our community,” said Life Church Pastor Terren Anderson.

He said it was a Bible verse that encouraged him.

“It was Jeremiah 29:7.” Terren said. “Also seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper,” Anderson said.

He said his congregation was very supportive.

“There was no disagreement, they all supported this,” Anderson said.

“It only happen because of the generosity of our members,”

He said church raised the money its during annual Faith Promise Pledge drive that began earlier this year.

He said since the church began 11 years ago, the money raised during the pledge drive was used for the church but this year his congregation decided to do something different.

Our entire congregation agreed that they would give all of the money away to four recipients; McAlester School District, Habitat for Humanity, Good Samaritan Outreach Homeless Shelter for Men and Hope House of McAlester.

Debbie Watson public relations for MSD said the donation was greatly needed and all of the  will be used for security doors at three schools.

“O my goodness it’s amazing,” Watson said.

“This will help us do all the things we were planning to do but couldn’t.”

She said it’s wonderful that the church saw the need here at home.

“We are so needy right here.”

Terren said he wasn’t sure at first if they would the entire amount away or keep a little for the church.

I was driving home from a conference and God told me to give it all away,” Anderson said.

And so the entire $150,000 will be given away during three church services, that are open to the public.

On May 28, during the 10:45 a.m. service Life Church will present a check of $50,000 to the  McAlester School District.

On June 2, during 9 a.m. service the church will donate $25,000 to Good Samaritan Outreach Homeless Shelter for Men and $25,000 to the Hope House of McAlester.

Also on June 2,  during the 10:45 a.m. service the church will donate $50,000 to Habitat for Humanity.

He said June 2 will also be the 11th anniversary for the church which started in a small building on West Hereford Lane, with a congregation of 56 people.

The church quickly grew and moved into a former drug store on Choctaw Avenue, giving it the name of the “Drug Store Church.”

He said the congregation soon grew out of that building and moved to the “old Anthony building” on the other side of Choctaw Avenue.

Then just two years after they first began, he said the congregation bought five-acres of land at 1300 S. George Nigh Expressway where in 2007 they opened a 25,000 square foot facility.

Meanwhile, Pastor Terren said the congregation continues to donate regularly to several local charities, supports missions in other countries and has recently opened a new campus in Wilburton.

He said in the past the church has used it’s donations for such missions as building water wells in India and churches in Africa, however, this year seeing the need right here at home, Anderson said they decided to make McAlester it’s mission.

“ It’s important not to forget our own backyard.”
