Sunbelt, Day 5: Texas too much for Canada

By Matt Goisman

McALESTER — This just wasn’t Canada’s year at the Jr. Sunbelt Classic. After going 3-6 and finishing eighth in 2012, the 2013 squad looked “way over-matched,” in coach Tom Colangelo’s words, in all nine of its round-robin games.

All nine of those games ended in losses, including an 11-3 run-rule loss to Texas in five innings Tuesday at Mike Deak Field in McAlester.

Already up 6-2 in the bottom of the fourth, Texas sent 10 men to the plate. Cameron Salvaggio started off the inning with a double down the third base line, Canada walked Tucker Davidson intentionally, then Kiley Huddleston singled to center field to load the bases.

Travis Stone drove in Salvaggio with an RBI single, then pinch-hitter Ramon Salazar doubled to the left field wall to drive in two more and make it 9-3 Texas. Stone then scored on a sacrifice fly by Diego Ganoa.

Canada pitcher Dalton Harvey struck out Brett Wright for the second out of the fourth, but then hit leadoff batter Dominic Thornton. Colangelo brought in Luke Tevlin to pitch, and Tevlin gave up an RBI single to Tucker Cascadden to make it 11-2 Texas.
