McALESTER — Four McAlester powerlifters placed overall in their weight classes and two more placed in individual events, helping the Buffaloes repeat as 5A champions at the Oklahoma Football Coaches Association state powerlifting meet Friday at McLoud. The 2014 Buffs finished second overall behind Mustang, a 6A school.

McAlester won 5A in 2013 as well. They finished fourth overall among large schools in 2013.

Senior Caden Pratt repeated as state champion in the 132-pound weight class.

Kyler Thompson, another Buffs senior, finished third in the 145-pound weight class.

Junior Matt Ferrell placed fourth in the 242-pound weight class.

Junior Riley Smith rounded out the Buffs’ overall plaers, taking sixth in the 220-pound weight class. He squatted 500 pounds, benched 300 and deadlifted 460 for 1,260 total pounds.

Cameron Hunter didn’t place overall, but he squatted 420 pounds to place in that event and score team points. He benched 240 and deadlifted 460 to finish with 1,100 total pounds in his first state powerlifting competition.

Sam Adams didn’t place overall, but he placed in the deadlift to score team points.

Sophomore Payton Haynes, another first-year powerlifter, competed in the super heavyweight class. He benched 260 pounds, squatted 455 and deadlifted 470 for 1,185 total pounds.

Tyler Barnes, Wilburton’s only powerlifter in the small school state competition Saturday, benched 295 pounds to finish third in that event in the 198-pound weight class. He lifted 1,070 total pounds but didn’t place overall.

Powerlifters from Savanna and Hartshorne also competed in the small school competition. No one from Savanna, Hartshorne or McLoud could be reached for more detailed results.
