PITTSBURG — New Panthers coach Wes Wood has his work cut out for him this year. Pittsburg’s spring 2013 baseball team couldn’t even make it through the season, bowing out of both the Pitt 8 conference tournament and Class B districts due to low numbers.
Only seven high-school students turned up for Thursday’s practice, and Wood said expects at most 10 to play this fall.
“It’s going to be a very challenging year,” Wood said.
“These kids would be happy if they could just make it through an entire season.”
Wood said his team will focus on fundamentals this fall, as many of his players are new to the sport. Freshman Kyler Birchfield is one of Wood’s more experienced ballplayers, and should alternate between pitching and playing in the infield.
“He’s one of those good ones to have,” Wood said of Birchfield. “Wherever you put him is going to be a strength. He’s played for years.”
