Lakewood Christian starts 17-6

McALESTER —

There’s an athletic program in McAlester. It’s only about 10 years old, but its basketball team has been to the state tournament six of the last 10 years, winning it all in 2006 and finishing in the top four in several other years.

This team isn’t the McAlester Buffaloes, and it isn’t the Frink-Chambers Falcons.

It’s the Lakewood Christian Lions. They’ve started their 2012-13 basketball season 17-6.

“I’d say we’re just as good as anybody else in the area,” Lions coach Cully Stevens said Tuesday.

“I have a great group of seniors. That’s really what’s spurred us on this year.”
