McALESTER — Whitney Nelms and Hailey Hyden. Devin Basinger and Kendall Barker. Kyle’ Thornton, Christy Pingleton and Katie Sams.
Those are just a few names on a list of 25 girls. They’ve all gone on to competitive dance squads in college and they all began their dance careers at the same place — Pam’s Academy of Dance, at 421 E. Cherokee Ave. in McAlester.
“A lot of them take dance, and they get on the high school Pom squad in the ninth grade,” Pam’s Academy owner Pam Davy said Wednesday.
“They stay four years there; they go to Nationals in Orlando, Florida, for years and years, and they got to dance around a lot of great dancers. And then they want to go dance at college.”
Davy grew up in McAlester, majored in ballet at the University of Oklahoma and danced on the OU Pom squad, then returned home to open Pam’s School of Dance in 1987. The school originally had just one classroom, but it’s since moved to its present two-classroom building.
