McALESTER — School’s back in session, and that means Buffalo season begins again. The Lady Buffaloes softball team opens its season today against the Tahlequah Lady Tigers at 5 p.m. at the Bud Hale Sports Complex in McAlester.
“They are really working hard,” Lady Buffs coach Justin Bond said. “The intensity in practice has really been there, and I think it’s going to show up.”
While a new year always means new players — and in the Lady Buffs’ case, a new head coach in Bond — several players from last year’s district-champion team return, starting with pitching ace Cheyenne Selman.
“We expect her to be a rock for us,” Bond said of Selman.
“I’m going to let her have some freedom and leeway with helping call her own game.”
Just like last year, Selman’s pitching should keep the Lady Buffs in most games. And just like last year, Selman will primarily pitch to Heather Morgano, the junior who returns as the team’s starting catcher.
Also a solid hitter, Morgano may hit clean-up behind Selman, providing some protection in the lineup so opponents don’t just walk Selman, the team’s best all-around hitter. Bailee Dawkins, the junior starting first baseman, is another potential four-hole hitter, but could also play a spot ahead of Selman in the two-hole.
