McALESTER — McAlester senior Drew House said Wednesday he’s been golfing “since I could walk.” He grew up across the street from the McAlester Country Club, and his father Marty House golfed and played football for the McAlester Buffaloes.
Drew said some of his earliest golfing memories involve riding around in the cart with his dad. Golf has always been a big bonding activity with his father, who still comes to watch his son play at tournaments.
“I really don’t like him to be there, (because) it makes me nervous,” House said, chuckling. “He’ll usually come to Regionals and State, but I don’t really let him come to any of the other ones.”
Like his father, House also played football for a time. House played center his sophomore and junior years, but he said because football demands year-round training, he eventually burned out and traded it for more time on the golf course.
“It’s just an easy, relaxing thing to do,” House said. “There’s no stress.”
