CHECOTAH — Josh Motley drove in Tanner Harvey with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth, giving the Crowder Demons a 3-2 walk-off win against the Stigler Panthers in Friday’s fifth-place game of the Summer High School League Post-Season Tournament in Checotah.
Clay Bell reached on an error to lead off the bottom of the fifth, his ball rolling under the glove of Stigler’s shortstop. Harvey ran for Bell, taking second when Stigler reliever Cameron Highfill hit Austin Weeks.
The umpire didn’t immediately signal that Weeks had been hit, and when Harvey started jogging to second, Stigler catcher Quantez Jim threw to second for the tagout. But after some loud protests from Stigler coach Kevin Wilkett and a lengthy discussion between the umpire, Weeks and Jim, Weeks received the free base and Harvey returned to second.
With no outs and a runner in scoring position, Highfill had to go after Motley, quickly running the count to 0-2. But Motley laid off the next two pitches — both out of the zone — to even the count, then laced the fifth pitch of the at-bat past second baseman Wade Henderson and into right field, easily scoring Harvey for the game-winning run.
