Having played for the McAlester Buffaloes, majored in physical education in college and spent 10 years as an assistant coach for the Buffs, Chris Zike had strong qualifications to take over as head coach of the Buffs basketball program when Jerry McCormick left at the end of the 2012-13 school year.
Zike should get that opportunity this coming winter. McAlester superintendent Marsha Gore said Tuesday she’ll recommend his reassignment as head basketball coach at the July 8 school board meeting, and she anticipates no issues with Zike’s confirmation.
Zike graduated from MHS in 2000, then went on to play two years of basketball at Murray State College in Tishomingo. He played an additional year of college basketball at East Central University in Ada, then spent his final year getting his degree and acting as an assistant coach at Latta.
Zike inherits a Buffs team that went 6-17 in the 2012-13 season, losing in the first round of the playoffs to Bishop Kelley in February.
