McALESTER — Chris Burns, a McAlester High School alumni and incoming junior at Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, has earned Academic All-Conference honors from the Great American Conference.

Burns, who plays tennis for the Savage Storm, is a mathematics education major with at least a 3.30 grade point average — the minimum GPA necessary to qualify, according to an SOSU press release.

Burns previously won SOSU Male Scholar Athlete of the Year back in April.

He is the son of McAlester head volleyball coach Anita Burns, and the brother of Sabrina Burns, who took home several academic honors while playing volleyball for Stephen F. Austin University through the 2012-13 school year.

A total of 470 GAC athletes earned the honor, the press release said, including 33 from SOSU. Two of Burns’ teammates, Guillermo Haugen and Laercio Lobo, also earned the honor.
