Miner Summer Pride at full strength

HARTSHORNE — Hartshorne football coach Bill Williams wasted little time after the 2012-13 school year ended. He started the Miners’ Summer Pride Camp on May 28, ran it for a month and then restarted it July 8.

Though officially a strength and conditioning camp open to both boys and girls of all sports, Williams said he’s asked for 100 percent attendance from his football players. One missed day since July 8 means 100 100-yard sprints — or “gassers” — a second missed day doubles the number of gassers, while a third means a one-game suspension.

“I don’t think we’ve had but one athlete that missed a day,” Williams said Tuesday. “My goodness, it makes it fun, but at the same time, it’s a lot of kids to work out. There aren’t very many schools that have 52, 53 kids showing up for varsity workouts in the morning. But we have all the coaches on board, so we have it broken down to where we feel like we’re getting something out of it.”

Summer Pride runs Monday through Thursday starting at 6:30 a.m. Williams said the early start-time both shows commitment and allows those players with jobs to get to them on time.

A typical session brings out about 50 high school students, plus approximately 12 junior-high students. Williams said the junior-high camp, which starts at about 8:30 a.m., isn’t mandatory, and because some of his eighth-grade students work, they choose to practice with the high school.
