McALESTER — Buffalo Valley pitcher Kareesa Kennedy gave up just two hits and a hit-by-pitch in four innings, and teammate Brenna Fry went 2-for-2 to lead the Lady Buffs past the Stuart Lady Hornets, 6-2 in four innings Thursday at the Pittsburg County Softball Complex.
Back-to-back singles by Emily Shaw and Fry put immediate pressure on Stuart’s defense in the bottom of the first, then pitcher Makayla Clark hit Amber Collins to load the bases with no outs. Kennedy put the Lady Buffs up 1-0 with a single to center field, and though Clark struck out Kelsey Brown for the first out, the ball got away from catcher Kayla Smith, allowing another run to score.
Breanna McPhearson made it 3-0 with a sacrifice fly, then Susan Little singled down the first base line to score Kennedy and give Buffalo Valley a 4-0 lead heading into the second.
Stuart responded in the top of the second with two runs, though better defense likely could’ve prevented both. Kylie Jernigen’s attempted bunt led to an error, as then Jessie Jones reached on an error that moved Jernigen to third.
Chassity Garvin courtesy ran for Jones and stole second, then Krystin Wilson struck out. But with Clark at the plate, the ball got away from catcher Bailey Scarberry, allowing Jernigen to score.
Scarberry tried to throw the ball to Kennedy covering home, but the ball sailed into the infield, and Garvin came home on the same play to cut the deficit to 4-2.
