Fall baseball preview: Crowder

CROWDER — The Demons return all of their players from the 2013 spring team that won their district. Freshmen dominated that squad, and as all those freshmen now have a year of baseball experience, ninth-year coach Larry Tucker said he expects some of the mistakes from the spring to disappear.

“Our strength is going to be defense, and our weakness is going to be offense,” Tucker said.

“We are sophomore-heavy.”

Crowder’s strong defense starts with sophomore Hunter Motley, who should be the team’s starting shortstop. He’ll also be the No. 2 pitcher on the team and bat towards the top of the lineup.

“Hunter’s ‘out’ pitch is his changeup,” Tucker said. “Fastball is average, has a good curveball, but his best pitch is his changeup. His changeup, when he’s throwing it well, he strikes a lot of batters out.”

Clay Bell may play some games at third, but the senior’s biggest contributions may be as the team’s pitching ace. Chase Kennedy rounds out the pitching staff, and he’ll also play some second base.
