McALESTER — Catching two bass weighing a combined 8.60 pounds, Shane Fields gave himself some breathing room heading into the last seven weeks of the TNJ season. Fields improved to 63.79 total pounds, while Keener added 5.83 pounds to bring his total to 60.84 pounds.
Wendell Henry ranked third as of July 30 with 50.58 total pounds caught, followed by Chuck Court with 46.25, John Huggins with 30.25 and TNJ organizer Lester Wray with 28.42. The third- through sixth-ranked anglers either didn’t fish or failed to catch a fish Tuesday night at Lake Eufaula Cove.
Henry led in the big bass category, catching one that weighed 6.41 pounds. Todd Mercer led the smallmouth bass category with one that weighed 4.16 pounds, and Chris Spears led the rough category with a 15.28-pounder.
Fields, Courtz and Wray led all boats with 14 nights fished as of July 30. So far 28 boats have fished at least five times to qualify for the End of Year Tournament on Sept. 28, but many more boats still need a few more nights.
