McALESTER — Every team needs a player like McAlester senior Kaleisha Johnson. She can score from multiple points on the floor, play great defense, lead the Lady Buffaloes and even carry them single-handedly when necessary.
“Whenever I first saw Kaleisha that first summer, I knew Kaleisha was something special,” McAlester coach April Burns said Thursday. “The way she could move — the kid, she is so athletic.”
Though Johnson grew up in the McAlester Public School system, she didn’t pick up basketball until middle school. At first a “girly girl,” as she called herself, Johnson was a cheerleader until her opinions on basketball changed about the fifth grade.
“I started to love the game, the energy” Johnson said. “I’m very competitive, and I like to win.”
