HARTSHORNE — A three-day cheerleading camp run by the Universal Cheerleaders Association finished up Wednesday at Taylor Gymnasium in Hartshorne. But while the UCA instructors typically showed up at 9 a.m. and left at 3:30 p.m., the Lady Miners typically came at 8 and left at 5:30.
Those same cheerleaders would then come back at 8 p.m., devoting an additional 90 minutes to more practice.
“They’ve all been very eager to learn,” Hartshorne cheer coach Jennifer Curliss said. “They look to improve themselves, each one of them. Doesn’t matter which one it is, they’re a very good group of girls. You would be amazed at what they have accomplished in three days. They have improved tremendously.”
All 12 members of Curliss’ varsity squad attended each day, she said, as did the majority of her junior-high squad. Both groups warmed up and stretched together, after which the squads worked on all of cheerleading’s fundamentals — dancing, chanting, motions and stuntwork.
The 12 Lady Miners also all tried out for UCA All-American honors. Brooklyne Curliss, Sarah Stiltner, Lexen Cook, RaeGail Wilson and Kenesha Davis were all named All-American.
