Stuart beat Canadian 15-0 in a summer-league game at the Pittsburg County Softball Complex in McAlester.
With a team of both junior high and high school players, Canadian had trouble just throwing strikes, with many pitches bouncing in the dirt well before reaching the plate. The Lady Cougars walked 16 batters Thursday, including five with the bases loaded.
With so few pitches in the strike zone, Stuart’s batters rarely even swung the bat. Their most aggressive inning came in the top of the first, with Chassity Garvin leading off with a walk, Cierra Chapman beating out an infield single and Megan Jernigen forcing an error at shortstop with a grounder that scored Garvin.
Chapman took third on the error and tried to score on a wild pitch, but catcher Haley Zerbal got it to pitcher Sam Standstipher covering home in time to prevent a run. Emilee Beck drew a one-out walk, then Kylie Jernigen drove in a run with an infield single.
After a walk by Jessie Jones, Kayla Smith made it 4-0 Lady Hornets with a two-RBI single to center field. Smith accounted for half of the Lady Hornets’ total hits, batting 3-for-3 with six RBIs.
