McALESTER — Caleb Eldridge (from Deer Creek) hit a two-run home run for Oklahoma Gold, and teammate Joseph Nemecek (Byng) reached base four times to lead Gold to a 9-5 win against Oklahoma Blue in Tuesday’s final round-robin game of the Jr. Sunbelt Classic at Mike Deak Field in McAlester.
Blue committed four errors in Tuesday’s game, all of which came in the bottom of the fourth and fifth. Not so coincidentally, Gold scored seven runs in those two innings, turning a 4-2 deficit into a 9-4 lead.
Blue’s problems started with one out and Gold runners on first and second in the bottom of the fourth. Gold leadoff hitter Shelby Reese (Perkins-Tryon) bounced a potential double-play ball to shortstop Blake Watts (Rattan), but Watts bobbled it, loading the bases.
Blue starter Blaze Hastings (Guthrie) then walked Chase Byndas (Dale) on four pitches to force in a run. Gavin Lavalley (Carl Albert) bounced a high chopper to third, giving Tanner Andrews no play but to throw Lavalley out at first, scoring Ryan Lujan and tying the game.
Gold took the lead for good in its next at-bat, when Eldridge tested Watts again at shortstop. Again, Watts couldn’t quite make the play, his throw pulling first baseman A.J. Austin (Collinsville) off the bag and allowing Reese to score.
