McALESTER — Soccer is a fairly new sport in McAlester. For soccer to ever challenge any of the more established sports, the sport needs “ambassadors” — people who understand the game well enough to translate its appeal to a new audience.
McAlester senior Victor Reich Martins has been such an ambassador. He comes from Fortaleza, a major city in northeastern Brazil, which historically has been one of the world’s great soccer countries.
“Soccer, it’s a very important part of the culture, because that’s the main sport in Brazil,” Martins said Tuesday. “Not only do parents support kids playing soccer since they were little, but kids also enjoy it because they have idols they can look up to.”
