McALESTER — McAlester head cheerleading coach Ashlee Shumway announced her resignation from that position Thursday morning.

Shumway said she is leaving to pursue a career in the pharmaceutical industry, and Krista Curley, a fifth-grade teacher at Parker Intermediate Center, will take over as interim cheerleading coach.

A 10-year coach at McAlester, Shumway led the Lady Buffs to the state cheerleading meet in 2013; her squad finishing 13th.

Shumway was named Region 6 Cheer Coach of the Year at an Oklahoma Coaches Association regional meeting Nov. 6 — the same meeting at which Buffs football coach Bryan Pratt was named an All-State football coach.

Shumway said in a text message, “I will continue to be heavily involved in supporting the cheer program, and will offer any extra teaching opportunities that my new career allows.”
