HAILEYVILLE — For Ryan Martin, transferring from McAlester to Haileyville made sense. His father, Dave Martin, had taken over the Haileyville football program, and the smaller school system would give him a chance to thrive both athletically and academically.
Haileyville didn’t appeal as much to Jed Dutton as it did to Ryan. But at the same time, Dutton had no particular reason to stay in McAlester.
“Me and Ryan are pretty close friends, so whenever he went to Haileyville, I went with him,” Dutton said Friday.
Having played a year of football in the sixth grade, Ryan also recruited Jed to play football a year later. Their friendship began that year in a seventh-grade social studies class.
“At the time, we were both little pudgy kids,” Ryan. “We weren’t the cool kids on campus. We were just two little pudgy kids making our way through McAlester.”
