McALESTER — Boasting twin appearances in the Class 5A state tournaments, McAlester’s boys’ and girls’ golf teams were honored at their end-of-season awards banquet Thursday at the McAlester Country Club.
Both head golf coaches gave a speech prior to giving out team awards. Lady Buffs coach Aron Holt took a more humorous approach, recounting a post-tournament meal at a restaurant called “Chair Crusher’s Grill” in Henryetta.
“JoHanne (Kalin) got a grilled cheese sandwich, and the bread was two other grilled cheese sandwiches,” Holt said, eliciting a loud laugh from the crowd. “Now think about that for a second. They took two grilled sandwiches, two pieces of cheese and then grilled that.”
Holt then awarded Newcomer of the Year, Most Improved and Player of the Year awards. Khloe Shannon took home Newcomer of the Year.
“I don’t know if she’s ever even seen a golf club before, but she did an incredible job, and I couldn’t me more proud of her progress throughout the year,” Holt said of Shannon.
Madalyn Nix won Most Improved.
“She’s been my two-bag the entire season,” Holt said of Nix. “I’m extremely impressed with this young lady’s work ethic at such a young age, and her scores were very impressive for a freshman. I think we’re going to be hearing big things about this girl in the future.”
Senior Madison Young won Player of the Year. As a parting gift, Holt also gave her McAlester’s placard and coach’s badge from the state tournament, framed and signed by all her teammates.
“If there’s anybody who can match wit or put me in my place, it’s this young lady right here, and I welcomed it,” Holt said of Young.
“She worked extremely hard. I’m very proud of the way she progressed.”
