McALESTER — McAlester coach Ashlee Shumway and her cheerleaders wanted to help. McAlester coach Bryan Pratt and his football players wanted to help. Discount Wheel & Tire owner Don Sloat wanted to help.
Partnering with McAlester Main Street and the American Red Cross, all of them found a way to help the victims of the tornado that tore through Moore on Monday, organizing a two-day donation drive in McAlester that concluded Wednesday.
“I think we had five vehicles of everything from shovels and tubs and masks to baby diapers,” Shumway said Wednesday. “You name it, toiletries. We had a lot of people in our community that in very short notice went out of their way to purchase supplies.”
Shumway said when she spoke with her cheerleaders about helping out Tuesday morning, all of them immediately jumped on the idea of helping out. Something similar with the football team, as several players approached coach Bryan Pratt about getting involved.
