McALESTER — Canadian:
Canadian’s football team hosts Central Sallisaw on Friday. The Cougars are still looking for their first district win of the season and their second win overall.
Haileyville football hosts Talihina on Friday. The Warriors are 0-7 this season, and Talihina comes in first in the district and undefeated this season.
Hartshorne football plays Gore at home on Friday. Because Gore is a non-conference Class A team, the game won’t affect the district race between Hartshorne and Vian in 2A.
McAlester’s junior high cross country team took third at the state junior high cross country meet Saturday in Oklahoma City. For more information, see Friday’s edition of the McAlester News-Capital.
The Buffs high school cross country team will be at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa for Regionals on Saturday. Other Class 5A teams expected to compete include Claremore, Tulsa Memorial, Pryor and Tahlequah.
Buffs football heads to Tulsa on Friday to face Bishop Kelley. With McAlester owning the tiebreaker against second-ranked Shawnee, a win against third-ranked Bishop Kelley would give the Buffs an easier road to a district title.
McAlester’s marching band competed at the OSSAA Eastern Regional on Wednesday at Broken Arrow. The Pride of McAlester will compete in the Oklahoma Bandmasters Association state contest Saturday in Mustang.
Quinton’s boys’ and girls’ cross country teams both performed well at Saturday’s 2A Regional meet in Henryetta. Brad Davis won the boys’ race in 17 minutes, 31 seconds, qualifying for this Saturday’s state meet in Shawnee.
Caleb Bengs finished 49th in 21:37 and Rhett Thurman finished 64th in 22:40. Because Quinton only raced three boys, it couldn’t qualify for State as a team.
Quinton’s girls raced five and did qualify as a team for Saturday’s state meet, finishing third with 106 team points. Courtney Taylor led the Lady Savages, finishing third in 13:12, and Hanna Pitman came in 16th in 14:12.
