PRESTON — Moss starter Wyatt Jones struck out 13 in a seven-inning two-hitter, leading the Pirates to a 4-1 win against the Hartshorne Miners in Saturday’s final of the Stuart Invitational Tournament at the All Star Sports Complex in Preston.
With two Pirates on base via walks in the top of the first, Jones smashed a double off the wall in right-center, scoring Justin Fitzgerald to put Moss on the board. Chance Long then grounded out to first, scoring Tye Rambo for a 2-0 lead.
Jones struck out the side in the bottom of the first, and Moss went up 3-0 on a one-out RBI single by Easton Elliot in the second. But on the next play, Fitzgerald flew out to LaMarcus Morris in center field.
Guessing that Morris wouldn’t make the play, Colton Bridger broke for third base. Instead, Morris threw the ball back to second to double up Bridger and end the inning.
