McALESTER — McAlester got top-three finishes in one- and two-singles in Friday's tennis tournament at Ada, but a 12th-place finish in one-doubles led to the Buffs finishing fifth overall with 41 points.
Buffs one-singles player Ngoc “Paul” Nguyen made it to the championship game, as he’s done basically the entire season. He lost to Jenks’ Chase Gordon in the championship match, 6-3, 6-4.
In two-singles, Chance Sistrunk took third, beating Muskogee’s Shan Bradley, 4-0 and injury default.
Eric Borengasser and Sam DeNike took sixth in two-doubles, losing to a duo from Heritage Hall, 6-4, 6-2. The defending 5A state champs, Heritage Hall finished two points ahead of McAlester in fourth place — the only non-6A school in the top four.
A better performance from one-doubles team Zach Dugan and Taeam Kang might’ve pushed McAlester past Heritage Hall, but the duo struggled once again, losing to Byng, 6-4, 6-2.
The Lady Buffs played at Ada on Saturday, finishing tied for 11th with 18 points. Enid won the tournament with 60 points.
Crystal Hixson posted the highest finish among the Lady Buffs, taking 10th in one-singles after losing to Shawnee’s Megan Hanson, 6-0, 6-2.
