McALESTER — McAlester senior Savannah Cannon has wanted to be a cheerleader basically since her family moved here from Eufaula before she entered kindergarten. Her older sister, Desiray Cannon, went through the Lady Buffalo cheer program, and Savannah fairly quickly became a regular at McAlester youth clinics.
“I knew from the time that she was very young that it was one of her biggest dreams to be a HS cheerleader,” McAlester cheerleading coach Ashlee Shumway said Tuesday. ”I knew even when she was coming in as a junior-high kid that she was really excited and enthused about being part of the program.”
Unable to make the varsity squad when she tried out as an eighth-grade student, Cannon instead became the manager, working hard enough in the summer to make the squad before the 2009 football season.
She'd go on to become what Shumway called “one of the best cheerleaders I’ve ever had.”
