Locals turn out for pool tournament

McALESTER — Marlan Isbell swept all six of his matches, going 12-0 to take home the $50 championship at an 8-ball tournament Wednesday at Back Alley Billiards in McAlester.

Shannon Snelling — a teammate of Isbell’s on the Bull Shooters team that recently competed in Las Vegas — broke in the first game of the championship, but he sank no balls, turning control of the table over to Isbell. Isbell missed the 11-ball, Snelling took over and sank the 14 and then the 13 before connecting on a deep shot on the 9.

Snelling’s run ended when he couldn’t bank the cueball off the far rail and sink the 11, and Isbell had already made his one mistake of the match. Isbell sank all seven solid-colored balls, striking the 7-ball in exactly the right spot to set up an easy shot on the 8-ball in a corner pocket for the win.

Having advanced through the loser’s bracket to the championship, Snelling would’ve needed to beat Isbell twice in a row to force an if-match, then beat him again twice. Instead, Isbell got what he called a “monster break” in the second game of the finals, sinking a solid and two stripes.

Isbell easily sank the 10, then sank the remaining five striped balls to set up a shot on the 8 almost identical to his shot in Game 1. And just like in Game 1, Isbell made it without issue to win the match and the tournament.
