Buffs JV, freshmen post winning records

McALESTER — McAlester freshman quarterback Andrew McBride played the fourth quarter of Friday’s blowout win against Skiatook. He ran QB counters effectively, handed off to running backs cleanly and found receivers open downfield on corners and hitch routes.

If all that sounds like what the varsity does week in and week out, it’s by design. The McAlester football philosophy runs not only through the varsity, but the JV and freshman teams as well.

“They run our base offense, and that’s what we put an emphasis on,” ninth-grade coach Richard Carney said. “There’s a lot of things that we don’t work with them on. But there are about four or five plays, about four or five passes, that we want for them to get a lot of repetition on, so that they definitely know how to execute the basic offense.”

The Buffs’ ninth-grade team finished its season 5-3 this year. JV coach Austin Maddux saw four games canceled by opposing schools, but his team still finished the season 2-1.
