McALESTER — McAlester United wrapped up its spring 2013 season Saturday, with several of its teams competing at a coed soccer tournament in Eufaula. McAlester’s under-12 teams took first and second at Eufaula, and its U-8 girls’ took second.
All told, more than 150 kids signed up for McAlester United, making it the biggest season in the club’s two-year history. The players spread out over 16 teams ranging in age from U-14 down to U-6, with the most kids playing at the U-12 level.
“It was a very good season for us,” club president and founder Sean McKelvey said Tuesday. “We played a bunch of towns that we’ve never been to.”
New towns McAlester United faced included Madill, Poteau and Sallisaw, plus a renewed relationship with Eufaula. McAlester also went to Broken Arrow for a tournament, with five different teams placing in the top four in their age groups.
Though they didn’t play in any tournaments, the U-14 Maulers produced an undefeated season. That team’s roster included Jerika Parent and Rashell Nooner, two of the club’s three players that have made the U.S. Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program, and the coed squad dominated despite playing almost exclusively boys-only teams.
