McALESTER — The McAlester High School basketball banquet took place on Sunday at the Lucy Smith Center at MHS. Approximately 90 coaches, administrators, players and family members enjoyed a a fajita lunch provided by CNS Catering in Atoka, as head coaches Jerry McCormick and April Burns wrapped up the season and honored the senior class.
Both coaches honored their senior classes, though only Charles Joyce attended from the boys’ team and received his commemorative trophy. After Burns handed out certificates to her underclassmen, she gave an autographed basketball to each of her four senior players, plus manager Ari Smith.
Burns announced each senior’s plans for college, with all of them going onto college. Both Kaleisha Johnson and Meredith Saunier earned athletic scholarships this year — Johnson to Murray State College, Saunier to Oklahoma Wesleyan University — and Burns said Heather Brozovich plans to try out for the basketball team at Northeastern State University.
Appropriate for a year in which every senior will go to college, the Lady Buffs also received an Academic Achievement plaque from the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association for having a team GPA higher than 3.25.
