McAlester’s Veteran’s of Foreign Wars - Post 1098 recently donated funds to the Pittsburg Schools Backpack program.
VFW District 7 Commander Steve Bentley said all five VFW posts in his district donated $1,000 to the Backpack program in each post’s area. Receiving $1,000 donations were programs in the area of the Eufaula VFW - Post 8798; the McAlester VFW - Post 1098; the Checotah VFW - Post 7624; the Holdenville VFW - Post 9827, and the Hartshorne VFW - Post 3085.
During the donation ceremony, Pittsburg County Sheriff Investigator Tommy Lyons said, “There are a lot of kids in our school system that are only able to eat those meals they get at school. This Backpack program sustains these children through the weekend when they don’t have food at home.”
Also at the donation ceremony was Jerry Williams, with the Combat Veterans Association. “We are also donating $250 to the Backpack program,” Williams said.
Jane Lyons, director of the Pittsburg County Schools Backpack program said the organization is currently helping 26 students, from kindergarten to seventh grade. “That number does fluctuate,” Jane Lyons said.
Bentley said the VFW raises funds to donate to children via an annual community golf fundraiser. The next golf fundraiser will be at the Arrowhead Golf Course in Canadian on April 28 at 8:30 a.m. Bentley said the fundraiser is always a fun time and will take place rain or shine. “Just show up and sign up that morning,” Bentley said.
