Children's Memorial Day

Candles to glow in a McAlester chapel in recognition of Children's Memorial Day

Candles will glow in a McAlester chapel this weekend at the same time other candles will glow across the nation and around the world.
It’s part of a special ceremony set for 6 p.m. Sunday at the Little Chapel on the Hill at 101 E. Washington Ave., held to recognize National Children’s Memorial Day.
Jim Crowson, who is spiritual care coordinator for Heartland Hospice and pastor of the First Christian Church in McAlester, will serve as featured speaker for the memorial ceremony.
“It’s a special opportunity for parents who have lost children to remember and reflect on the lives of the children,” Crowson said.
A special candlelighting ceremony planned as part of the memorial gathering  calls for the candles in McAlester to be lit at the same time as candles are lit across the United States and at various sites around the world where Children’s Memorial Day ceremonies are held.
“Candles are a reminder that light prevails,” Crowson said.
The public is welcome to attend the ceremony, held in remembrance of children who have died. Family members and friends are welcome to attend and those who do are welcome to bring a photograph of their child to share with others, organizers of the service said.
National Children’s Memorial Day is held each year on the second Sunday in  December.
“It’s a solemn, sacred assembly,” but there is also fellowship involved, Crowson said.
“We’re healed by remembering, not forgetting,” he said. “Faith calls us to remember that the end of this life is not the end of life. We believe by faith that our relationship with others who have gone before us continues after this life.”
Organizers of the memorial ceremony said anyone needing more information can phone 918-429-8680 or 918-429-2667.
