McALESTER — On Thursday 46 students at Crowder High School received new lap-top computers with back-packs as part of a program aimed at helping students go to college.

Some 485 in the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Program also received laptops, according to Linda Morgan program director.

“This is the 17th school we have given them to,” Morgan said.

Although the 2006 GEARUP grant “officially” ended August 31, 2012, Morgan said she requested and was granted permission to order laptops with backpacks for 485 GEAR UP seniors.

“This is the last thing we can do for our seniors,” she said.  The students have been part of the program since 2006.

One of the recipients of the computers was Crowder senior Hailey Greenwood.

She said she’s been in GEARUP since the sixth grade.

“I am really excited to get one,” she said.

She said students at other that received laptops include; Kiowa High School, Pittsburg High School, Quinton High School, Indianola High School and Canadian High School.
