A truck driver from Delaware died in a vehicle accident Sunday on U.S. Highway 69 in Savanna.
Michael Gardner, 53, of Milford, Del., was traveling in a 2009 Volvo semi truck at approximately 10:46 a.m. Sunday, according to an Oklahoma Highway Patrol incident report. The passenger side rear trailer brake on the truck had frozen due to cold weather, the report states.
Gardner exited the cab of the truck without setting the brakes, the report states, and crawled under the trailer to free the tire. Gardner was able to free the brake, causing the truck to roll over him, the report continues.
The truck drug Gardner about 67 feet and he was pinned for 10 minutes before the McAlester Fire Department was able to free him, the report states. Gardner was transported to the McAlester Regional Health Center where he was pronounced dead from massive injuries. Gardner’s passenger, Robin Gardner, age 53, of Milford, Del, was not injured as a result of the incident.
Garrett Gray, OHP Trooper with the Pittsburg County Detachment of Troop D, investigated the incident. He was assisted by Trooper Jason Fox, the Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Officer and the McAlester Fire Department.
