Okla. lawmaker wants animal shelter inspections

McALESTER — A state lawmaker says he’ll propose legislation requiring inspections of animal shelters in the state.

Democratic Rep. Brian Renegar, of McAlester, says his proposal is the result of animal shelters in Latimer and Pushmataha counties that he was asked to help shut down. Renegar — a veterinarian told the Tulsa World that the animals were being kept in deplorable conditions and some had to be euthanized.

Humane Society of the United States Oklahoma director Cynthia Armstrong says she supports the proposal and that she hopes municipal animal shelters will be included in the required inspections.
