Closings and a change in schedule for trash pick-ups are planned for the McAlester area during the Thanksgiving holidays.
McAlester City Hall planned to remain open until 5 p.m. Wednesday, before closing for the holidays.
City Hall will then remain closed Thursday and Friday before reopening at 8 .m. Monday, said Linda Daniels, executive assistant to City Manager Pete Stasiak.
Essential services, such as fire, police and ambulance will continue to be provided.
However, there will be a change in the trash pick-ups from Allied Waste Services, not only for the city of McAlester, but throughout the service areas covered by Allied’s Alderson office.
“We will be one day behind,” said Leanne Thompson, at the Allied office in Alderson.
That’s because Allied workers are getting Thursday off for Thanksgiving Day.
“If your (regular) service day was on Thursday, it will now be on Friday,” Thompson said, referring to the schedule for the Thanksgiving holidays only. “If your service day was on Friday, it will be on Saturday.”
Allied plans to return to its normal schedule for the week following Thanksgiving.
Meanwhile, the Pittsburg County Courthouse plans to remain open half a day Wednesday, said District 2 Commissioner Kevin Smith.
“We’ll close at noon Wednesday,” Smith said, with the courthouse remaining closed Thursday and Friday for the Thanksgiving holiday.
It will reopen at 8 a.m. Monday, said Smith.
The U. S. Postal Service office in McAlester, as well as other U.S. Postal Service office in the area will be closed Thursday for Thanksgiving Day. Also, there will be no mail delivery Thursday.
While the service area will be closed, the lobby of the post office at the corner of Fifth Street and Washington Avenue, as well as lobbies in other post offices, will remain open so that those with rental boxes can check the boxes if they wish.
Normal service will resume Friday, said Brett Jones, a clerk at the post office building in McAlester.
The McAlester Public Library will be closed Thursday and Friday for the Thanksgiving holiday, according to Library Assistant Ellen Barlow.
However, no early closing was set for today.
“We will be open until 8 p.m. Wednesday,” Barlow said.
Following the Thursday and Friday holidays, it’s back to work for the library staff for the weekend.
“We will be open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday and from 1:30 p.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday,” said Barlow.
The U.S. Office of Personnel Management lists Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, as a holiday for federal employees.
Oklahoma’s ok.gov Web site lists both Thursday and Friday as a Thanksgiving holiday for state employees.
